Enemies will fight to keep the hero from the inmost cave. Relationships will be tested and solidified. Your hero needs to prepare for the mid-point climax, which is the second biggest moment in your whole story. And it gives you a chance to start throwing rocks. It tests the MC’s strength and determination and forces them to truly commit to the path they’ve chosen. It isn’t just about the arrival at the foot of the special world, though. It’s the moment when Harry and his friends get past Fluffy and through the trap door. It’s the place where Luke makes his descent on the Death Star. He calls it “yet another special world.” This is the place in the story where Dorothy reaches the Emerald City. The Inmost Cave is the heart of the special world, according to Christopher Vogler. That town, and the house where I stayed in particular, was the inmost cave of this particular adventure (or story, right? Every adventure is a story.) I got to yes.Īnd then I took an airplane and a rickety bus, and I arrived in a little town that was as foreign from Los Angeles as possible.
I had to convince my parents not only to pay for the trip, but to let me travel alone with another ninth-grader to a foreign country to spend time with her family, who my folks had never met. Her literal “reward” is the hard drive of the simulation data that has all the proof of the evil things Jeanine Matthews did, but the more important reward is the self understanding she gained throughout her journey, and the confidence that came with it. Tris’ Return is riding the train to Amity with Tobias and the remainder of Abnegation.
This represents The Resurrection, because it is the climax of the story, and of course, our hero succeeds and saves the day. She quickly realizes that she cannot physically overpower him, so she stops to try to get him to to recognize her and it works he fights out of the simulation and they escape with the data. In her journey, The Resurrection is when Tris has to fight Tobias while he is in a simulation in order to take the simulation data and beat Jeanine Matthews. This is The Road Back in Tris’ journey because it is returning to her Call to Adventure, but this time with experience, bravery, and a mission. They have to take the train to the same roof she jumped onto for her initiation, and fall down onto the same net in order to get in, except this time she isn’t afraid. This stage is represented by her, Caleb, Marcus, and her father sneaking back into the Dauntless compound to finish the fight against Jeanine Matthews. This represents The Reward, because the protagonist has changed for the better as a result of The Ordeal, and now has something she didn’t before. Finding out her mother was Divergent, and originally from Dauntless, helps her accept herself and realize that she doesn’t need to fit into a single faction she can just be Divergent, like her mother was. Tris’ reward is greater confidence and understanding of herself. Tris and her mom fight off soldiers as they run to a safe house when she tells Tris to be brave and sacrifices her life to ensure her daughter will make it out alive. The Ordeal for Tris losing her mother fighting Jeanine Matthews during the attack on Abnegation. This is The Approach because she is literally facing her fears and doubts, and afterward she has time to think about how far she’s come and relax a little.
She finally gets to celebrate and relax with all her new friends after working hard to survive initiation. The Approach to the Inmost Cave in Tris’ journey is represented by completing her fear landscape test and being accepted into Dauntless. I'm not Dauntless or Abnegation.I'm just Divergent
